Do you require machining for extremely hard materials such as carbides, ceramics, titanium alloys and heat treated tool steels? These are very difficult to machine using conventional machining but they can be precisely machined by EDM or Electrical Discharge Machining, also known as spark machining, spark eroding, die sinking, wire burning or wire erosion. This metal fabrication process obtains the desired shape by using electrical sparks.
Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is a non-traditional form of precision machining that uses thermal energy instead of mechanical force to remove material from a workpiece. Engineers often turn to EDM when machining processes such as CNC milling and CNC turning cannot produce the desired cut, such as sharp internal corners or a particularly deep cavity.
Advanced Tech Machining offers EDM at our machine shop in Northern California - Fremont - San Francisco Bay Area. Our ISO 9001:2015 Certified facility offers both limited run and serial production parts machining.
Precision Metal Fabrication for Hard Materials with Electrical Discharge Machining or EDM at Silicon Valley, San Francisco, San Jose, Northern California - Call: 408-549-7447
In EDM material is removed from the work piece by rapidly recurring current discharges between two electrodes separated by dielectric liquid that is subjected to an electric voltage. The process is a highly precise method of metal removal and involves in creating a path of electrical discharge between an electrode and the workpiece.
An electric arc is produced, removing materials from the electrodes, resulting in an erosive effect that is ideal for machining hard metals and materials that would otherwise be very difficult to machine with traditional techniques.
EDM usually works with materials that are electrically conductive, cutting intricate contours and cavities in pre-hardened steel as well as other metals and alloys such as titanium, hastelloy, kovar and inconel. The intense heat generated by the electrical sparks, which can reach temperatures of up to 12,000 degrees Celsius, melts and vaporizes the material. The debris is then removed by a dielectric fluid.
Advantages of Electric Discharge Machining:
Electrical sparks around 8000º C to 12000º C can shape hard materials, metals and alloys.
Complicated shapes and patterns can be produced with EDM.
Machining time does not exceed conventional methods making EDM competitive with other types of machining.
EDM is utilized by engineers when standard machining process such as CNC milling and CNC tuning can't produce the desired cut.
Mechanical stresses do not result from this process as the tools and materials do not contact each other.
EDM is most widely used in the mold-making, tool and die industries.
It is also gaining ground in prototype manufacturing.
EDM is used for fabricating production parts particularly in the Aerospace, Automobile and Electronics industries.
EDM is suitable for small-batch production particularly for prototypes and also has many applications in industries such as automotive and aerospace industries because EDM can accurately produce complex engine parts, components that are both sophisticated and composed of hard materials meant to withstand extremes of temperature and stress. EDM is also used in a variety of industries for injection molding.
