CNC Router Parts
Spindle/Router
The spindle is what is used to rotate the cutting tool to the required operating speed. The spindle is often mounted on a gantry above the bed. This gantry can move left and right along the x-axis and back and forth on the y-axis.
Motors
A CNC Router has a servo motor for each of the three motion axes. A separate high-speed motor rotates the cutting tool.
Controller
Usually consisting of of multiple stepper controller drives to control the motion of the stepper motors and the speed of the spindle/router.
Bed
The area where the raw stock is mounted. Some beds will have multiple holes or attachment points to make it easier to mount clamping hardware to keep the raw stock fixed in place during the cutting operations.
The process is low cost particularly compared to CNC milling and more suited to softer materials, working with a variety of materials such as plastics, foams and softer metals. This versatility makes CNC Routers an ideal choice for projects that need detailed work and nice finishes like crafting signage or artistic design.
The exceptional precision of CNC Routers allows them to perform intricate designs and cuts for carving, engraving and shaping. They are used for furniture crafting, prototyping and parts creation as well as other common tasks.
CNC Routers use cutting tools that give more control over depth and allow carving in 3D, which plasma and laser cutters cannot do. However they are not suited for tougher materials unlike plasma or laser cutters.
